Panathinaikos AKTOR Athens beat Kosner Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz 85-79 in Athens, with a 20-14 third quarter doing the damage before the visitors' late push.

Mathias Lessort's 9/10 inside decides Panathinaikos v Baskonia

Mathias Lessort decided the game from the bench, scoring 20 points on 9/10 two-point shooting in 24 minutes. He was the leading scorer on the night for either side.

He added 6 rebounds, a steal and a block, committed only 1 turnover and went 2/3 from the free-throw line. His PIR of 22 topped the game.

The performance sat well above his season average of 12.6 points across 7 games. Lessort ranks first of 156 rated players in the Euroleague by TeamKeys Rating, at 100.

How Panathinaikos beat Baskonia 85-79 quarter by quarter

Panathinaikos won it in the middle two quarters, taking the second 23-19 and the third 20-14 after a 20-21 first quarter. That third period was the decisive stretch.

Baskonia managed only 14 points after the break in that third quarter, and the cushion Panathinaikos built there carried them through the finish. The hosts never needed a big closing quarter.

The visitors did take the fourth 25-22, so the ending was tighter than the middle of the game suggested. The final margin of 6 points showed how much ground Baskonia had to make up.

Nigel Hayes-Davis was the second key figure, with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals in 29 minutes. He shot 4/6 inside, 2/3 from three and 4/7 from the line.

Sylvain Francisco ran the offence with 11 assists and 10 points, although 5 turnovers took some shine off his night. He ranks 21st in the league by TeamKeys Rating, with Hayes-Davis 28th.

The frontcourt rotation was efficient around Lessort. Kostas Mitoglou scored 8 points in 10 minutes on 4/4 twos, while Guerschon Yabusele added 9 points, going 3/3 inside but 1/5 from three.

Why Baskonia lost despite Matteo Spagnolo's 16 points

Baskonia lost because their scoring dried up in the third quarter, not because their leading players missed shots. Matteo Spagnolo was close to flawless with 16 points in 23 minutes.

Spagnolo went 5/6 inside and 2/2 from three, adding 4 assists against 2 turnovers. Tadas Sedekerskis gave 10 points and 5 rebounds off the bench on 5/6 two-point shooting.

Kenneth Faried chipped in 6 points on 3/3 twos with 2 steals in 19 minutes. Their efficiency kept Baskonia within reach, but it could not offset the 20-14 third quarter.
